What is Harm Reduction?

Harm Reduction is an approach that meets people who use drugs (PWUD) where they are and empowers them to live healthy, self-directed lives. The foundations of harm reduction are: dignity, respect, and body autonomy. It aims to reduce the negative consequences associated with drug use, such as reducing the spread of disease and fatal overdoses. Understanding that drug use is complex, PIK believes that PWUD must be met with dignity, respect, compassion, understanding, and a non-judgmental space. Ensuring that individuals practice safer use, safer sex, and compassionate overdose response is the heart of all of our programs. PIK hopes to spread the message that Harm Reduction is a Pathway of Recovery.

In December 2023, Prevention is Key was recognized by the New Jersey Department of Health as a Registered Harm Reduction Center.
