This month, the Mental Health & Addiction Coalition hosted its annual Legislative Breakfast, featuring two notable guest speakers: Kelly Lerner Sanders, Director of the Division of Mental Health Advocacy for the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender, and Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University and acclaimed author of “Fires in the Dark: Healing the Unquiet Mind.”
Kelly Lerner Sanders provided an insightful overview of the challenges faced by individuals with mental health issues in the justice system, stressing the importance of advocacy to ensure they receive fair representation and support. Her talk highlighted ongoing efforts to improve mental health advocacy across the state.
Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, a leading expert on mood disorders, shared her personal and professional perspectives on mental illness, particularly bipolar disorder. She captivated the audience with reflections from her latest book, “Fires in the Dark,” underscoring the importance of understanding mental health as central to overall well-being and the role of research and treatment in healing.
The event highlighted the need for continued collaboration between advocates, professionals, and legislators to improve mental health care and support systems. We are grateful to both speakers and all who attended for contributing to this important dialogue.
